In anticipation of our trip to San Francisco, I've been reading Fodor's San Francisco and California books, researching restaurants, parks and adventures online and looking at maps to figure out our best routes for the four days we'll be out there. Sunday morning, I found the Man vs. Food episode for San Francisco. I ran upstairs, grabbed my husband and dragged him away from his (eh HEM) video game, so he would watch the episode with me. It started with gigantor delicious looking burritos from Taqueria La Cumbre in the Mission District. Our mouths were definitely watering after seeing those burritos. The next place Adam Richman went to was Ike's Place. It was decided. We must go there.
For this:
Oh yeah. Those are jalapeno poppers and mozzarella sticks, onion rings and 4 or 5 different types of meat on that sandwich. It is so ours. Don't judge. We like food. We like food that offers you an explosion of happiness in your mouth when you bite into it. I think this sandwich will fulfill that.
Also, as much as I think this looks delicious, I know I can probably eat three bites and I'll be full. I also think we need to stop by this place that Bakerella wrote about recently. Cotton Candy on top of cupcakes. Yes. Please. American Cupcake, here I come.
Ok, so we have our sandwich and cupcakes covered. We'll get ourselves some sourdough and might even get chowder in it! Yup, we don't mind being tourists when we're...being tourists. On that note, we are going to go to Fisherman's Wharf and it's going to be awesome. We're also going to Alcatraz. That is going to awesomely touristy, as well. Oh right, know what else we're gonna do? We're going to drive the 17 Mile Drive You know, what "locals" know to stay away from? Yup, we're gonna do it. Why? Because it's famous for a reason.
We're there for 4 days together. Any other suggestions on what we should do to really own our tourist experience in San Francisco? Anything else we should definitely eat while we're there? We really like to eat.

Have fun! :)
There are so many good restaurants in SF to try, you'll need longer than 4 days! Obviously, I think you should try my favorite restaurant, the Stinking Rose, but I know all that garlic isn't for everyone. If you do though, definitely get the bagna cauda appetizer!
If you like Brazilian food, Mangarosa in North Beach is really good too. There's also no shortage of good seafood, although the really good restaurants are quite expensive down by the water.
And if it's clear on the west side of the city, I definitely recommend a mid-day walk along the Lands End trail by Fort Miley to a neat viewpoint of the GG bridge (https://picasaweb.google.com/mbhinch/FortMileyHike2006#5107190205234619410), and then drive over to Ocean Beach. I think they only get about 1 sunny day every 2 weeks or so, but if it's on a Sunday afternoon, go to lunch at the Park Chalet, on the edge of GG Park, they have amazing food, great beer, tons of outdoor seating and usually live music. It was one of my favorite outdoor spots in SF!
Hope you guys have a great trip!
Oh! One more cool thing to do, that's not touristy, but the locals love is to take the ferry from SF to Sausalito/Tiburon and have lunch on the deck at Sam's. You get to see SF from the ferry, and enjoy some waterside food, and the deck is a fun place to hang out on the weekends.
OMG we are going to San Francisco in a few weeks too and I HAVE to convince my husband to go to that cupcake place. It loos AH-mazing! Thanks for the tip!
oh wow! a trip to San Francisco you will have tons of fun and there is so much to see and do. And yes, the food is just delicious. San Francisco is one of my favorite places to visit. I hope you have a great time! And eat lots of good food for us! :-)
I stayed right one Fisherman's Wharf which was of course quite touristy but it was the fun kind, not the obnoxious EXCUSE-ME-I'M-TRYING-TO-GET-TO-WORK-MOVE-OVER-WITH-YOUR-CAMERAS touristy that I deal with when I'm at school living in NYC. Our hotel was really great. We stayed at The Argonaut and it was really quite inexpensive compared to the location and all the hotel had to offer. I definitely recommend it.
